International: New Student Checklist

Apply for Your Student Visa

As soon as you are admitted to Portland State University and have received your I-20, you will need to apply for your student visa.

 

Set Up Your PSU Student Account

Read the instructions on your letter of admission or, for help, call 503-725-HELP (4357) or go to the Activating Your Student Account website. Once you’ve set up your student account your PSU email address will be activated and you will receive ALL EMAIL CORRESPONDENCE about your next steps through your PSU email account.

Confirm Your Intent to Enroll

Confirm that you're coming to PSU by submitting the Intent to Enroll form. As soon as you submit this form you will be eligible to sign up for New Student Orientation.

 

Sign Up for International Student Orientation

Once you've signed up for International Student Orientation you will be automatically signed up for Online Orientation. You will need to complete Online Orientation prior to your arrival at PSU. Once you have completed Online Orientation you will be able to register for classes, which you should do as early as possible.

Register for Classes

After completing online orientation you will receive instructions for scheduling a phone appointment with a PSU Academic Adviser. Once you've had your advising appointment, you will receive an email indicating that you may register for classes.

Students beginning the Intensive English Language Program (ESL courses) should contact the Intensive English Language Program for information about orientation at ielpadm@pdx.edu. You will register for classes after you arrive on-campus.

 

Submit Measles & Mumps Vaccine Requirement Form

Oregon law requires all international students to submit proof of measles vaccination or provide an exemption before you can register for classes. Review the instructions to download and submit the form here: pdx.edu/shac/measles.

Get in Touch with Your International Student Mentor

Peer mentors assist new international students in the transition from their respective countries to PSU by engaging with students before they arrive, leading small groups at International Student Orientation, and serving as a cultural bridge and a resource to new students during their first term in the United States.

Submit Missing Documents

Official Documents: While you are still in your home country, make arrangements to obtain any official transcripts, degree certificates, or test score reports that you have not yet submitted to PSU. If your admission letter does not indicate that you need to submit additional official documents, you may skip this step.

Course Descriptions and Syllabi: If you have completed college/university courses outside the U.S. and hope to use these credits in your Portland State degree program, please bring the following: course/subject descriptions, syllabi, and any other information that will help us determine the specific content of your previous academic study. Without this information, you may not be able to use these credits towards your Portland State degree.

Live with a Host Family: Homestays are a great way to learn more about the U.S. culture. PSU does not offer homestays, however, 2 local homestay providers that international students use are listed here.
