The Center for Japanese Studies' first lecture for Winter term will be presented by Professor Carol Gluck of Columbia University:
'Japan’s Remarkable Meiji Era of Modernization, 1868-1912'
Carol Gluck is the foremost expert on modern Japan in the world. In this lecture she will revisit the themes of her landmark first book Japan’s Modern Myths by analyzing the remarkable transformation that Japan underwent in the decades from 1868 to 1912, the Meiji era of modernization.

Carol Gluck is the George Sansom Emerita Professor of History at Columbia University and widely considered one of the leading historians in the world. She specializes in modern Japan, from the late nineteenth century to the present; international relations; World War II, and history-writing and public memory in Asia and the West.
