Graduate Advising

The CEE Department offers three graduate degrees: Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Master of Engineering in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Graduate Student Advising

Master's and PhD students with advising questions should contact their faculty adviser for course planning, research opportunities, career advising, or thesis/dissertation questions. Faculty contact information can be found on our Directory. If you are not sure who your adviser is, please contact ceedept@pdx.edu.

If you have general program requirements, graduation, or MS/MEng/PhD procedure questions, please contact the CEE Academic Program Administrator, Kiley Melicker, at ceedept@pdx.edu.

By Arrangement Credit

Students may make arrangements with their faculty advisor to complete course work via a "by arrangement" course, which includes the following credit: CE 603 Dissertation, CE 503 Thesis, CE 5/601 Research, CE 5/604 Internship, CE 5/605 Reading and Conference, and CE 5/606 Project. Be sure to review your degree requirements in the CEE Graduate Handbook or check in with your faculty advisor.

Master's Students

Graduate Student Handbook
Provides students with the information they need to navigate through the program. Students should read this handbook in its entirety to familiarize themselves with Departmental policies and requirements.

Master's Program of Study Form
Master's students are required to file the Master's Program of Study Form with the Department after completing 18 credits. The Master's Program of Study Guide provides a list of the required (core) courses and includes a list of approved electives. More information on course planning can be found on the Course Information site.

MS Project/MS Thesis Defense Flyer Template
Students are expected to provide a flyer to the CEE Department to advertise their project presentation or thesis defense no later than one week prior to the presentation/defense date. 

MS Project Approval Form
This form must be submitted to the CEE Department Office after completion of the MS project report and presentation.

This Microsoft Word template provides basic guidelines for formatting the MS project report.

Petition to Allow Grade of C+, C, or C-
Although grades of C+, C, or C- are below the graduate standard, they may sometimes be applied toward the graduate degree with the consent of the student’s adviser as well as the Graduate Program Chair. This departmental petition may be used to request such a waiver. This petition does not apply preadmission credit. Students must complete a Graduate Petition to apply preadmission credit with a grade of C+, C, or C- to their degree program.

PhD Students

Graduate Student Handbook

PhD Program of Study Form
PhD students must work with their advisers within the first quarter of enrollment to develop a draft program of study, using the PhD Program of Study Form. The final program of study must be approved by the comprehensive exam committee as part of the Comprehensive Exam Prospectus. Please review the CEE Graduate Handbook for more information about this process.
