- Andrés Holz, geography faculty, won a $22,418 UPP 2020 Seed Grant for his project “Tree-ring Reconstruction of Historical Groundwater-streamflow Dynamics.” Holz will be working with Tess Harden from the USGS Oregon Water Science Center. The team will investigate the relation between climate parameters — including rainfall, temperature, and snowpack and water levels — at the source of the McKenzie River. The project will provide information for hazards assessments and forecasts related to floods and droughts, which affect aquatic habitat and water resource management decisions regarding water quality and supply.
- Christopher Monsere, civil and environmental engineering faculty, Sirisha Kothuri, civil and environmental engineering senior research associate, and Nathan McNeil, urban studies and planning research associate, will act as investigators researching the safety of on-street bicycle facility designs with a three-year $600,000 grant from the National Cooperative Highway Research Program.
- Olyssa Starry, University Honors College faculty and Jen Morse, environmental sciences and management faculty, won a $24,191 UPP 2020 Seed Grant for their project “Willamette Water Quality Past and Present.” Starry and Morse will work with Jennifer Morace from the USGS Oregon Water Science Center. The team will look at water quality changes to the Willamette River in the past decade and augment standard data with tests for industrial pollutants, sediment activity and cyanotoxins. They will also initiate a sampling plan for new contamination concerns at six beach locations on the river.
