CEE Students Shine at ASCE Student Symposium

ASCE Sustainable Solutions Team Received 2nd Place at this year's Symposium. The team includes: Harper Thomson, Ava Grech, Blu Luz, Amelie Smith, Abraham Eddy, Jason Grajales, Alma Bolanos Hinojosa, Jovanna Quezada-Montano

Portland State University's Civil and Environmental Engineering American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Group demonstrated their excellence at the ASCE 2024 Pacific Northwest Student Symposium & Competition, held this April in Vancouver, BC. Despite encountering challenges, the team showcased remarkable talent and dedication, earning recognition across multiple categories. Students' success at the ASCE Student Symposium underscores their technical proficiency, collaboration skills, and innovation in civil and environmental engineering.

In Sustainable Solutions, the Portland State team secured an impressive second place, showcasing their commitment to innovative environmental engineering practices.

During the Mead Paper/Presentation category, Caitlin Jacobson's last-minute substitution for Andrew Terrell led to a shared honor of second place, highlighting the team's adaptability and individual excellence.

In the Steel Bridge competition, Portland State secured third place in lightness and second place in cost estimation, with the successful loading of the bridge marking a significant improvement over the previous year's performance.

Although the Concrete Canoe encountered transit damage, the team's overnight efforts to patch it up culminated in a successful snap test, showcasing their resilience and technical acumen.

Congratulations to the ASCE Student Group, student officers (Caitlin Jacobson, Julia Skillin, Alicia Antillon, and Enrique Cougenhour), and faculty advisers (Evan Kristof and Mary Ann Triska)! The PSU ASCE Student Group is excited to co-host the ASCE 2025 Pacific Northwest Student Symposium & Competition next year.
