Description: To support study in a term, semester or yearlong study abroad program with an explicit language component.

Criteria: One scholarship will be awarded to a student who meets the following criteria:
•    Full-time PSU student
•    Completion of at least 90 credits (junior standing)
•    Completing of at least 12 credits of a world language at PSU
•    3.0 overall GPA
•    3.4 GPA in all WLL classes
•    Financial need
•    Proposed study abroad program must be approved by PSU Education Abroad Office that takes place in a non-English-speaking country and that has an explicit language component

Application:

  1. Submit a completed  WLL online scholarship application by April 1.
  2. Transcripts of all course work (can be unofficial).
  3. Essay to include: your language of study, international experience to date, plans to study abroad; how your studying abroad experience will affect your future plans
  4. Two letters of recommendation, at least one of which must be from PSU language faculty.

Selection/Award Process: 

1) Submit completed application to WLL by April 1
2) Recipient will be notified by May 16th.
3) Funds will be available during the following academic year (summer term included)
4) Award will be presented at WLL spring graduation/award celebration in June

Name: Farrens Endowed Scholarship for Overseas Study

Description: This scholarship provides financial support to a student who might not otherwise be able to afford a study abroad trip of a term, semester or year to a non-English-speaking country. Although not required, we hope that students who receive this award will find a way to pay it forward by giving in some way to those PSU students who come after them.
Criteria: One scholarship will be awarded to a student who meets the following minimum criteria:
•    Full-time PSU student
•    Completion of at least 90 credits (junior standing)
•    Completing of at least 12 credits of a world language at PSU
•    3.0 overall GPA
•    3.0 GPA in all WLL classes
•    Financial need

Criteria: This renewable scholarship is open to all full-time PSU students who have formally studied Arabic for at least two years; had an outstanding performance in previous Arabic studies; have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher; and a commitment to successfully complete the Minor in Arabic, or the Major in Arabic Language & Literature at PSU, and/or Certificate in Middle Eastern Studies (To quality for this scholarship MESC Students must take Ar 301-2-3 or Ar 304-5-6 or higher level Arabic classes); Academic excellence and financial need are a major consideration.

Criteria: It is intended that two scholarships will be awarded each year. The intended annual award amount is $1,500 for undergraduates and $1,800 for graduate students. This scholarship will be promoted and will benefit students within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, World Languages and Literatures with a preference for the following criteria:

Class level: Full-time undergraduate students

  • Field of study: Majoring in Arabic Language and Literature
  • Other criteria: Attends one or more 400-level Arabic language or literature classes
  • Other criteria: Previously completed AR 303: Third Year Standard (fus-ha) Arabic and AR 306: Common Spoken (‘ammiyyah) Arabic
  • Academic record/GPA: 3.5 or higher
  • Preference: Financial need

Class level: Graduate students

  • Field of study: MA in World Languages and Literatures program
  • Other criteria: Attends two 500-level advisor approved Arabic classes, or another 500-level advisor approved class.
  • Academic record/GPA: 3.5 or higher
  • Preference: Financial need

If there are fewer than two candidates selected using the above criteria, then any World Languages and Literatures section head, academic advisor, or faculty can nominate a “distinguished” student working toward a major offered by World Languages and Literatures to receive an “Honorary” Hanna and Wardah Sbait Scholarship. One student will be selected per academic year. 

Students must be committed to completing the Major in Arabic Language & Literature or the M.A. in World Languages and Literatures. Recipients of the “Honorary” Hanna and Wardah Sbait Scholarship must be committed to completing a Major in the Department of World Languages & Literatures.

Undergraduate and Graduate students must commit to completing a special project as directed by the academic advisors of the program. The project outline will be given to the students applying for the scholarship.

Scholarships shall be given on a competitive basis among qualified applicants enrolled and with good academic standing at PSU and in accordance with PSU’s general scholarship selection guidelines and processes. 

To the Applicant - Your application must include all the following items:

The statement (approximately 350-words, in Arabic (UG), English (GR)) should address the student’s educational goals, university activities and related interests. One letter of recommendation should be from your WLL professor, the second letter should be from another PSU faculty member with whom you have studied.

Mandatory Categories of Research, Translation Projects, and Financial Awards:

In order to obtain this scholarship, the Recipients are required to do one of the following projects. Specific guidelines must be obtained from world@pdx.edu or cliffb@pdx.edu.

1. Research Essay including a short literary analysis (4-6 page essay)
Scholarship: Undergraduate: $1,500/ Graduate: $1,800.
2. Translation Project (4-6 pages)
Scholarship: U.G. $1,500/ G. $1,800. 
3. Comparative research essay, or interdisciplinary essay (4-6 pages)
Scholarship: U.G. $1,500/ G. $1,800.
4. English to Arabic translation (4-6 pages)
Scholarship: U.G. $1,500/ G. $1,800.
5. Translation to English of folklore materials that originated in the literature of one or two of the world languages being majored in, of the M.A. in World Languages and Literatures (4-6 pages)

Criteria: The Department of World Languages & Literatures offers renewable scholarships of up to $1000 to students enrolling in and completing second- and third-year modern Hebrew sequences.  The award will be used to meet tuition costs and related educational expenses at Portland State University.  Preference will be given to students in the more advanced (300-level) sequence, and to students undertaking the Minor Degree in Judaic Studies.  Full-time PSU students and high school students may apply.  Academic performance and financial need are also major considerations.

The scholarship was established by Steven Rosenberg and Ellen Lippman to encourage academically talented university and high school students in their study of modern Hebrew.

This scholarship can also be awarded to an eligible student who intends to continue to the third year and/or to complete the minor in Italian at Portland State University. A narrative statement (approximately 350-words, in English) should describe the student’s motivation for continuing to study Italian. Two letters of recommendation are required.

Name: Sandra G. Freels Endowed Scholarship for the Study of Russian

Description: The Sandra G. Freels Endowed Scholarship for the Study of Russian is awarded to
Russian Flagship students or Russian majors on the basis of academic performance followed by
financial need, and can be used for academic year, semester or summer study abroad on the Russian
Overseas Flagship, RLASP programs, or other PSU-approved overseas program for the study of
Russian. The award is not renewable. Priority will be given to Flagship students who have been
admitted to Russian Overseas Flagship; followed by Flagship students admitted to the Russian
Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP) for a semester; followed by Flagship students
admitted to RLASP for a summer. 

Criteria: One scholarship will be awarded to a student who meets the following minimum criteria:

  • Admitted to the Russian Flagship Program and/or majoring in Russian
  • 2.87 overall GPA
  • 2.87 GPA in RUS and WLL classes
  • Financial need
  • Attendance in one of the following study abroad programs:
    • Russian Overseas Flagship;
    • Semester-long Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP);
    • Summer RLASP;
    • Any other PSU-approved overseas program for the study of Russian.

Application Process: Fill out and submit the completed on-line application form, including the
Personal Statement and Financial Circumstances, along with unofficial transcripts for all post-
secondary institutions attended.
