Staff Spotlight: Lemmon Lemmon

Lemmon Lemmon

Lemmon Lemmon works for Campus Rec as a part of the Member Services team.  Lemmon’s first visit to PSU was pre-COVID, and they liked the campus a lot, so they decided to attend PSU. Having grown up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Lemmon moved from Pleasanton, CA to Oregon in 2020.  Lemmon is majoring in Biology with a public health minor, and they expect to graduate in the spring or fall of 2024.  One of Lemmon’s career goals is to pursue an imaging degree and work as an ultrasound or MRI technician. However, Lemmon is also interested in working at Campus Rec after graduation if a full-time position opens up.  That’s how much they love working here!

Lemmon started out working at Equipment Checkout in May of 2022.  By the end of that summer they had moved up to work the till at the Member Services (MS) desk. Now, just one year later, Lemmon has been promoted to be one of the next Member Services Student Coordinators. They enjoy being trained in all MS positions, which allows them to help out wherever is needed and have more job variety. Lemmon has faced some challenging moments working in MS, such as having to remove patrons for not adhering to Campus Rec rules. This has helped them to develop stronger professionalism in tense situations. Lemmon shares that it really helps to keep Campus Rec’s values in mind when faced with challenging situations in the workplace.  In the fall of 2022, Lemmon was recognized with a Campus Rec Values Award for innovation for their work helping MS analyze processes for improvements, which made a big difference for the team.

Additionally, Lemmon really connects with Campus Rec’s value of inclusion. They spoke about how a lot of people hate gyms because of the fear of being judged. Because Campus Rec offers many opportunities and support for our community, it is easier to help people feel more comfortable and welcome at the Rec Center.  Lemmon says that Pods are one of the opportunities they appreciate at Campus Rec where staff can share and hear different opinions, ideas, and perspectives. They want the Rec Center to be a welcoming and inclusive place for students to hang out and participate in fun activities together, such as climbing and playing sports.

In Lemmon's spare time, they enjoy reading and playing video games like farm simulators and Minecraft. When they want to take a break from screens, they re-read books that they enjoyed as a kid, such as Hunger Games or science fiction books. Lemmon also plays water polo, and recommends it to anyone who is interested! Lemmon's top goal right now is to rescue a cat from a cat adoption team.

Lemmon's advice to other Campus Rec student staff: “Don't be afraid of talking to everyone!” They explain that you can always learn something new from people and create a better community. It is important to get out of your comfort zone; don't be afraid to just try and go for it. Another piece of advice is to get involved in multiple things at Campus Rec, such as staff movie nights, breakfasts, and student employee appreciation week activities. Lemmon loves working in MS because they get to talk to everyone and spend time with coworkers and patrons. Because Campus Rec is so fun and welcoming, Lemmon says that, “Everyone should apply for a job at Campus Rec!”

Thank you for all you do, Lemmon! We are looking forward to seeing you around the Rec. Be sure to say hi to Lemmon if you see him around.
