How to Get a Promotion

Are you ready for more?

You could already love the role you’re in, but someday (maybe?) you might want a little something more at work.  Perhaps you’ll be ready to take on more responsibility or apply for a leadership position.  When that time comes, here’s a few tips from the pros about how to get noticed when that next opportunity opens up.  Whether you move up here at CREC (to a Student Coordinator or Student Building Supervisor position), or in the future at your dream job, here are a few things you can do.

Tips for getting promoted:

  1. Tell your supervisor you are interested.  Supervisors aren’t mind-readers and while they are interested in your potential, they need you to tell them your goals. Be explicit, let them know what job you want and have a talk about the feasibility and timeline.
  2. Learn from the pros.  Take a look around you at some leaders in your midst.  What are they doing that sets them apart?  What are they known for?  Identify some key habits or traits that are within your reach and strive to raise the bar for your performance.
  3. Take initiative and solve problems.  Find ways to make yourself more effective and efficient at work. Find work that needs doing and then do it.  Fix things that aren’t working. There’s always work to be done.  Consider the big picture (which is what leaders are doing) and notice what more you can do.
  4. Make other people’s jobs easier.  This is teamwork.  If you give more than required, on each shift, your teammates will notice it and they’ll appreciate working with you. Your supervisor will notice it.  And when that next leadership position opens up, people will think of you.
  5. Ask for feedback.  Ultimately, you will learn and grow the best when a supervisor gives you candid feedback about how you’ve been doing and how you can improve.  Supervisors who tell you you are already doing great aren’t helping you grow, they are helping you stay comfortable.  Reach past your comfort zone with a growth mindset and find things you personally need to work on.  It’s hard to know how you are perceived at work, so just ask!  “How am I doing so far?”
  6. Say “Thanks”. The best leaders recognize the efforts other people are making.  You don’t need to be in a higher position to notice when one of your colleagues is doing a great job or has done something extra.  Notice and say thanks. Spread the positivity.  The more you give, the more you get.
