Where there are people, there are communities: universities are no exception. Far from it, they are the perfect settings for communities to thrive. Student communities are especially unique, there are few places where individuals collectively live, breathe, and learn together in a contained environment. As an example, campus jobs are one place where students share space, and these jobs become part of the fabric of university life and student skill-building. Student workers spend a great deal of time absorbing skills not only necessary for professional development but for learning to work together. Through shared experiences, a community is built.

It is important to know how to build community as well as maintain it for the sake of student success and wellbeing. Creating and maintaining community at work can look like bringing a positive attitude, showing up & being a reliable teammate, and communicating with others in a respectful way. Think about the ways this can build community as well as impact student success and wellbeing: students feel uplifted, put at ease knowing they are supported by peers, and show up authentically knowing they will be treated with respect. Tucker, a Student Building Supervisor, touches on the power of inclusivity: “Community is good for cultivating a work environment where everyone feels included. Good community leads to a sense of wanting to show up and being excited that you are going to be welcomed and make friendships.”

Having a shared sense of community is a superpower. Amidst tough challenges, communities come together to solve problems and overcome obstacles. Braxton, an outdoor trip leader from the Outdoor Program shared, “There are a diverse range of people coming in for trips. It’s really cool that people don’t know each other but through the trip they overcome challenges, make a friend, learn new things.” This sentiment connects to a holistic wellbeing model where physical, social, and emotional cups are filled.

Treating others with the same respect you would want to be treated with can go a long way in validating the experiences of others while leading to a sense of empowerment. Mutual respect can forge special connections, and relationship-building is the foundation for building a strong community. There is no one better to talk about the importance of relationship-building than Zea, a personal trainer: “At Campus Rec, and in general, my favorite ways to build community are to involve myself in the interests of those around me, strike up thoughtful conversations, repeat small gestures of kindness and note the preferences of those within that community. I believe community is all about connection and support- creating an environment that uplifts everyone in it. Relating, taking interest in others, making oneself dependable and volunteering personal skills where they are needed for success are all part of being a positive, contributing member to one's community.”

While each individual’s perspective is valued in its uniqueness, perspectives of community overlap and converge. Community is important for building inclusivity among members, overcoming challenges as a collective, strengthening relationships, and creating a compassionate environment where everyone is respected. The university experience is about pursuing something more to life than academics. Actively cultivating relationships and building a sense of community is a valuable tool students can use to achieve success and wellbeing.
