Pre-Arrival Information for International Students

Planning Your Travel to Portland and PSU

  • Choose Your Arrival Date: Plan to arrive early enough to get settled in your housing and attend orientation before your classes begin. Immigration regulations allow you to arrive no more than 30 days before the start date listed on your I-20 or DS-2019. It is a good idea to plan to arrive in Portland with enough time to get used to the city and climate and to secure your housing before the university begins.
  • Prepare Your Finances: Prepare your finances for your trip to Portland and your first days/weeks on campus.
  • Arrival at the Portland Airport and Transportation to PSU: Public transportation options and maps options for getting to the Portland State campus.

Before You Leave Home

  • Collect Your Required Documents: Take another look at your admission letter. If you see documents listed there, start satisfying these requirements now.
  • Know Your Health Insurance Options: All international students must have health insurance. Know about Portland State’s policy for automatic enrollment in the University’s extended coverage health insurance. All PSU international students and their families are required by law to carry health insurance for the duration of their studies. Health care in the U.S. is very expensive and insurance is intended to protect individuals from serious financial hardship. It is the student's responsibility to comply with insurance requirements by checking their student bill for insurance fees each term or meeting all of the requirements for a waiver. This video helps explain the healthcare system in the United States. The video has subtitles in Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese and English.
