Admission
Students must be admitted to a degree program at Portland State University.
Residency
The student must meet Oregon residency requirements as stipulated within OAR 580-010-0030. NOTE: This waiver is not applicable to nonresident students.
Criteria
In order to be eligible, students must meet one of two sets of criteria:
The student must be a child (includes adopted child or stepchild) of a Purple Heart recipient, alive or deceased, who was relieved or discharged from service in the Armed Forces of the United States with either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions and was awarded the Purple Heart in 2001 or thereafter for wounds received in combat;
OR
- The child (includes adopted child or stepchild), spouse, or unremarried surviving spouse of a member of the United States Armed Forces who:
- Died while on active duty, or
- Died as a result of a military service-connected disability, or
- Is 100% disabled as the result of a military service-connected disability as certified by the Department of Veterans Affairs or any branch of the Armed Forces of the United States. (An eligible child must be 31 years of age or younger at the time the child applies for the waiver.)
Degree Eligibility
This waiver is only for a qualified student’s first bachelor’s and/or master’s degree:
- An eligible child who is 31 years of age or younger is eligible for a waiver of the bachelor’s degree and/or master’s degree.
- A child older than 31 years of age is eligible for a waiver of the master’s degree program if the child applied for and received a waiver for a bachelor's degree when they were 31 years of age or younger.
- A spouse, or unremarried surviving spouse, may be eligible for a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree.
Award Amount
The maximum waiver granted under this remission program shall be:
- The total number of attempted credit hours equal to four years of full-time attendance for a baccalaureate degree, and
- The total number of attempted credit hours equal to two years of full-time attendance for a master’s degree.
Important Information
- This waiver covers 100% of the tuition costs and could result in reductions of other types of federal, state, or institutional grants, gift aid, or student loans. If you have another type of aid specifically to cover tuition, please reach out to Financial Aid & Scholarships to discuss the impacts.
- This waiver does not apply to study abroad programs or self-support credits.
- This waiver is not retroactive and will not be applied to any terms prior to confirmation of the student’s eligibility for approval of the waiver form.
- The waiver applies to tuition only; all other fees related to each term are the financial responsibility of the student.
Application
- Students previously receiving the Veterans’ Dependent Tuition Waiver at another Oregon public university or community college are still required to submit a waiver application to Portland State University.
- The application form must be submitted to the Veterans Certification Office no later than the first day of the academic term.
