Veterans Certification Deployment & Unexpected Withdrawal
What if I get deployed?
The Portland State University refund policy generally provides for full refund of dropped or withdrawn courses resulting from being called to active duty in military service. No refund is available for course work in which a student has received academic credit, or from courses not dropped/withdrawn. For a full refund, the student must make a written request to the Office of the Registrar within thirty days of withdrawal. Documentation of military orders is required. You may email your request to the Veterans Certification Office at email@example.com.
Oregon state law OSR 352.293 allows for a deployed student to choose either a withdraw from the course(s), or to receive an incomplete grade to be completed after deployment. OSR 352.293 applies to deployments of 30 days or more. Please refer to the link provided for complete details and stipulations.
A student voluntarily enlisting in military service must drop/withdraw according to existing academic policy, procedures, and deadlines, or by petition to the Deadline Appeals Committee.
What if I cannot attend classes due to an illness or unexpected situation?
If you cannot attend classes because of something unexpected (such as a death in the family or personal illness) please contact the Veteran Certification Office to discuss options for dropping/withdrawing you from your courses. There are many different options for dropping/withdrawing and speaking to our office before taking action can help you make the best decision for your situation, hopefully avoiding creating a debt with the VA.

If you’re receiving VA educational benefits, you are also responsible for ensuring that they are aware of your situation as well. If you are receiving benefits under the Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31) you will also need to speak to your caseworker to ensure proper protocol in withdrawing from courses.

Monthly verification of enrollment required for some programs:
If you are a student-veteran receiving benefits under Chapters 30 and 1606, you are required to complete a monthly verification of enrollment with the VA before payments will be released to your account. The verification of enrollment must be done at the end of each month and may be done online at: Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE) or by calling the following toll-free number: 1.800.827.1000.
