Whether administrators, faculty, staff, or students, we are challenged to continue to evolve alongside our campus community while acting on equity and racial justice. We encourage you to participate in diversity education & learning opportunities that work with your schedule.

Workshops by Request 

Contact GDI to arrange sessions specific to your unit, department, school, student group etc.  In the past we have explored topics such as microaggressions, implicit bias, developing inclusive workplaces and adopting an equity lens.

Safe Driving Resources

• Vehicles for field research can be rented through the Oregon State Motor Pool or Enterprise. When driving a rented vehicle for research purposes, a PSU Accident Report Packet should always be kept on hand, and includes the following:
• Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Traffic Accident and Insurance Report form (subject to accident criteria on the top of the form)
• PSU insurance information - please contact Risk Management (johansed@pdx.edu)  for this information
• Witness Cards - two in each packet
• Accident Information Form
• All potential drivers need to self-register for and complete the PSU Safe Driving Training in Canvas
• All potential drivers need to complete the PSU Driver Authorization form found on the Driver Authorization website:
  • Verify driver’s license information
  • Driver signs and department head approves
  • Form is retained in department files
  • Renew driver authorization every two years; consists of an interview between the supervisor and employee to confirm the information on the original authorization form

PSU Driver Authorization Forms should be retained by the employee's department.

Obtaining Authorization for High Occupancy Vans

Employees seeking authorization to operate high occupancy vans (vans which hold more than nine passengers) must first complete the process to become an authorized university vehicle driver. Once this process is complete there are additional requirements for obtaining high occupancy van driver authorization. 

Self-register for and complete the PSU High Occupancy Van Operator Safety Training in Canvas.

Complete the PSU High Occupancy Driver Authorization Form.

• Verify PSU Driver Authorization Form is completed
• Verify High Occupancy Van Operator Safety training is completed
• Driver and department approver signs and submits to Risk Management
• Risk Management approves and signs
  • Forms may be submitted to Don Johansen (johansed@pdx.edu)
• Form is retained in department files
• Renew authorization form every two years; consists of an interview between the supervisor and employee to confirm the information on the original form

Employees may not operate a high occupancy van until Risk Management returns the approved form.

PSU Driver Authorization Forms should be retained by the employee's department.

PSU Plan for Conducting Off-Campus or Off-Site Research in a Safe and Inclusive Working Environment

A community effort is essential to eliminate sexual and other forms of harassment in science and to build inclusive scientific climates where people can learn, grow, and thrive. PSU seeks to support these goals and we have created an easy to use template to assure research can be conducted in a inclusive and safe way. PSU Plan for Conducting Off-Campus or Off-Site Research in a Safe and Inclusive Working Environment

For all grant applications where NSF is the Direct or Prime sponsor, the Principal Investigator (“PI”) is responsible for determining whether any “off-campus or off-site research” will occur in their project.  If off-campus or off-site research is anticipated, the PI is responsible for completing and the distributing this plan to all team members.

Boating Safety Resources

Oregon State Marine Board - All boaters who operate a motorboat with over 10 horsepower (hp) must obtain an Oregon Boaters Education card

Complete a Float Plan for every trip.

Paddle craft safety training is recommended for kayaking and canoeing.

Inadvertent Discovery Plans

Field work can lead to unexpected encounters with cultural resources or even human remains. “Cultural resources” is a legal term for the tangible aspects of human cultural heritage. These materials are evidence of past human activity, including Native American traditions, practices, and histories; Oregon settlers; and Hawaiian, Asian, Latinx, African, and other diasporas.

Cultural resources are protected by state and federal law because they are finite and irreplaceable parts of cultural heritage. In Oregon and Washington, it is a crime to knowingly disturb, excavate, or damage any cultural resources or burials on any private or public property. Additionally, PSU’s Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Policy requires PSU personnel to contact PSU’s NAGPRA Coordinator if they inadvertently discover cultural resources or human remains on PSU property or while conducting any activity on PSU’s behalf.

To help protect cultural resources and ensure compliance with laws and regulations, project managers should create an Inadvertent Discovery Plan before starting any project that could inadvertently disturb any cultural resources or discover human remains (e.g. any ground disturbing activity). Project managers can use the PSU Inadvertent Discovery Plan template, or any other plan that is required by a permitting agency.
