Severe weather and other events like holiday closings cause interruption of normal operations at the university. Occasionally, the university deems it necessary to declare campus closure, in which case, only essential personnel are required to report to work. During severe weather, lab personnel are expected to stop general operations and safely store and secure all hazardous materials, equipment and research data to minimize the risk of injury and property losses.
Lab Safety Awareness Week is an event held in February that recognizes the successes of laboratory health and safety programs and offers information and ideas on how to keep our faculty, staff, and students safe.

PSU has made great strides to standardized safety information provided outside of each laboratory door. Each lab door needs to make sure that their placard is up to date and that proper emergency contact information is provided on the placard.

Environmental Health and Safety encourages laboratories to conduct safety surveys of their areas on a regular basis. We encourage you to do this safety survey at least twice a year and discuss the results with others in your laboratory. This survey does not include biological safety or radiation safety issues. This self-assessment does not replace the laboratory safety assessments that are conducted by the Chemical Hygiene Committee.
