Housing FAQs

New Residents

When you live on campus, you can really immerse yourself in the PSU community. It’s a convenient location, making it really easy to get to class, access professors during office hours, be more involved in student activities, and utilize the various resources on campus. On campus living provides opportunities to develop deeper connections, make life-long friends, and create lasting memories. All at competitive rates that are often below the local rates for off-campus housing, and includes all utilities!

First Year Experience Students select their housing based on First Year Experience Community, with options located in three of our Residence Halls. Available room types include Studios and Studio Suites.

Transfer and Continuing Students can choose to live in any of our six Residence Halls, featuring a variety of Unit Types, including Sleepers, Studios, Studio Suites, and 1-bedroom apartments.

First year students who live more than 25 miles away from campus at the time of application, are under 20 years of age on the first day of the Fall term, and who enroll in 8 or more credits, are required to live in a PSU residence hall during their first academic year (fall, winter, and spring terms).

It has been shown that first-year students who live on campus perform better in the classroom and report a better college experience than their peers who live off campus. We offer a variety of intentional communities in our First Year Experience (FYE) program

FYE students living on campus are required to have Meal Plans, and those are handled through the Housing Office. All other students can choose to sign up for a meal plan through PSU Eats directly.

Housing Contracts can be completed through the Housing Portal.

Information on specific roommates and room numbers are released in late August.

You can indicate a preferred roommate, or we’ll do the roommate matching for you! All students will complete a roommate questionnaire as part of the twelve question roommate profile while completing your Housing Contract. The best way to get a good match is to be honest in the profile.

If you have a preferred roommate, you can specifically request them once you and they have both completed the Housing Contract as long as you are both First Year Experience students, or both Transfer/Continuing/Graduate students. This request can be made using the roommate search tool in the Housing Portal. This tool will not work for roommates of different genders, however both students can instead email housing@pdx.edu to be manually placed together.

Portland State University provides All Gender Housing. When students complete the Housing contract they indicate their gender and indicate those genders that they are comfortable living with.

More information on Roommates and Gender in University Housing can be found on our Roommates and Gender webpage.

We've put together a helpful list of suggested items to bring with you, as well as a few things to be sure you leave at home!

Room Transfers or Room Swaps are available during Week 2-8 of Fall and Winter Term. Residents can ask for a Room Transfer form by contacting housing@pdx.edu in order to request a form.

On-campus residents need to be a PSU student actively pursuing a degree or actively pursuing post-baccalaureate study. Undergraduate and Post-Baccalaureate students must be enrolled in at least 8 PSU credits and Graduate students must be enrolled in at least 4 PSU credits during Fall, Winter, and Spring Terms. See Terms & Conditions for more details.

New summer residents must enroll in 4 PSU credits to be eligible to live on campus in the summer term. Students who live on campus during the preceding spring term are allowed to stay for summer and not enroll in summer classes. This includes students graduating at the end of the spring term.

PSU does not offer family housing or accommodations for children, partners, or spouses. College Housing Northwest and other local apartment complexes offer housing options for families.

You will need to purchase a parking permit through Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS).

Pets are not allowed in the Residence Halls, with the exception of fish in a tank that is ten gallons or less. Emotional Support Animals are allowed if they have been registered and approved through the Disability Resource Center.

You can put in a maintenance request through your Housing Portal. If it is an urgent issue, then contact the Housing Office during business hours, or call the RA on-call during the evening or weekends.

You will want to go to the Broadway Service Desk (Broadway Hall, 1977 SW 6th Ave, Suite 226) during business hours. After hours, contact your RA On-Call.

To address mail you will want to use this format:

All furniture in the unit when you move in needs to remain there.

If your heat is not working and you live in Ondine, Broadway, Epler, and Blumel, then you will want to place a maintenance work order through the Housing Portal

St. Helens, and Montgomery run off of boilers. These are not turned on until we start to have consistent cold weather. If you believe the boilers have been turned on and you are not getting heat please put in a maintenance order through the Housing Portal.

The Residence Halls do not have air conditioning. However, residents are permitted to use their own air conditioner units as long as they meet specific parameters as laid out in the Housing Handbook
