Peer Note Taking

Peer Note Taking is an accommodation alternative for students who are unable to take fast, quality notes in their lecture courses, and need a way to review and study the lecture material. We do our best at the DRC to identify a classmate who can share a copy of their own notes with the DRC student before we reach out to the instructor to call for note takers. Notes are shared through the DRC Online web portal, maintaining the anonymity of the student(s) receiving notes. A small payment is provided to the note taker at the end of the term for the work of sharing the notes with our office. Prospective note takers can find information on our Note Takers webpage.

Once you’ve met with the DRC and have been found eligible to use peer note taking as an accommodation, you need to enter your service request each term.

  • In the first week of the term after you have attended the first lecture, confirm your need for a note taker in DRC Online. Please see the tutorial on how to confirm your note taking request.
  • Once you have completed this step, the DRC Access Services Coordinator will begin to recruit a note taker for your course.
  • Once a note taker has been matched and they begin uploading notes, you will receive notifications in your PSU Odin email account.

If you have any questions about the process, contact the Access Services Coordinator at drcnotes@pdx.edu.

Peer Note Taker Agreement

This agreement explains the note taking process and the responsibilities you and your note takers have in making sure this accommodation works smoothly.

I understand that I must comply with the following requirements in order to receive note taking as an accommodation at Portland State University. Prior to completing this form, I must be eligible to use a note taker in DRC Online.

  1. Peer note taking is an accommodation primarily for synchronous lecture courses that are not video recorded by the instructor.
  2. After attending at least one class meeting, it is my responsibility to log into DRC Online and confirm that I need notes for the course. I understand that this is a secondary step after entering the service requests, and that I will not be able to confirm my note taking accommodation until after the first day of my course. I understand that prior to my confirmation Note Takers will not be recruited.
  3. My confirmation of the note taking request will be processed by the DRC and all possible efforts will be made to find a note taker in a timely manner. I understand that, despite these efforts, a note taker may not be found.
  4. I understand that note takers are only responsible for providing notes from class periods after they are assigned. There may be days of class lecture before I entered my service request or before the note taker was matched, where notes are not available.
  5. Note takers provide a supplemental service and do not substitute for the notes I take for myself. I understand that the DRC provides note taking skills training and other resources to students who may need them.
  6. I understand that note taking services are not a substitute for my attendance in the course. In addition to taking my own notes, I will also use any other in-class accommodations for which I am eligible.
  7. The DRC will notify me as soon as a note taker is assigned. The DRC will also contact me if a note taker cannot be found and inform me of my other accommodation options.
  8. I understand note taker training is available to all note takers and they must submit the Note Taker Agreement Form that outlines their responsibilities at the beginning of the accommodation period.
  9. I understand that it is my responsibility to notify the DRC immediately if the notes I receive are unclear, not received within 24 hours of the class meeting or inappropriate for my needs based on my disability. I will also contact the DRC if I no longer require note taking services.
  10. Even though it is the note taker’s responsibility to pre-arrange for a substitute when they will be out, I understand that brief lapses in the note taking service are possible throughout the term. I will continue to take notes for myself if I am able and utilize other accommodations for which I am eligible.
  11. I understand that notes will only be available electronically via DRC Online and my information will not be released to the note taker.
  12. I understand that if I do not login and download my notes within two weeks, I will receive a written warning. If I do not log in and download my notes by the fourth week, I will receive an email notifying me that note taking services have been suspended. Note taking services will remain suspended until I meet with a DRC Access Counselor and Consultant to discuss the policy and procedures for receiving note taking services.

You will be asked to e-sign this agreement every term when you log in to DRC Online to enter your service requests. On occasion, you may be asked to provide a signed copy of this agreement. If requested, print this page and sign as directed below, then return the signed document to the person who requested the signed copy.
