Deadline Extensions Agreement

Deadline extensions give students the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of course knowledge and meet essential course requirements even when their disability interferes with their ability to complete work on time.

Agreement

I understand the following guidelines regarding my accommodation for deadline extensions:

  1. I must log in to DRC Online each term and request deadline extensions for each class where I think I might need it each term. An instructor is not obligated to provide a deadline extension until they receive the official faculty letter from the DRC. Furthermore, accommodations are not retroactive so it is best to do this at least two weeks before each term begins.
  2. After receiving the DRC accommodation letter notification email, and before I need to use the accommodation, instructors and I are equally responsible for communicating with each other regarding Deadline Extensions.
  3. Deadline extensions cannot change or reduce the essential requirements or specific learning outcomes of the course.
  4. Deadline extensions allow for a two or three (2-3) day extension on individual assignments, papers, and projects when my disability interferes with my ability to complete the work on time.
  5. If a deadline extension creates a fundamental alteration to the course or inhibits the learning process for other students, or if more time than 2-3 days is requested, I need to consult with a DRC Access Counselor and Consultant before proceeding.
  6. The following are things to consider regarding communication between me and my instructors:
    1. We can converse about my accommodation for Deadline Extensions in several ways, including a private meeting at the instructor’s office, by phone, or by email.
    2. The proactive conversation about Deadline Extensions should focus on the impact of missing a deadline in different situations.

Guide for Discussion Topics

  • Will assignments, papers, or projects be discussed in class after they are turned in?
    • If assignments, papers, or projects are discussed in class or immediately after the due date, a deadline extension may not be reasonable. My instructor and I will consult with the DRC if needed.
  • Are there discussion posts?
    • Deadline extensions may not apply to online discussion board posts if the instructor is grading these posts as “in-class participation”.
  • Are there group projects?
    • When working with a group, deadline extensions may disadvantage the other students in the group and, therefore, may not be reasonable. We will consult with the DRC if needed.
  • How and when will I communicate that I need a deadline extension?
    • I must communicate my request for a deadline extension as far in advance of the deadline as possible. In the instance that my disability flares up suddenly and I do not have advance notice, I should contact the instructor as soon as possible. If consultation around this or more than three days is needed, we will consult with the DRC.
  • How will I turn in assignments, papers, or projects (e.g. via email, Canvas, in person)?
    • If the assignment, paper, or project is usually submitted in person, the instructor should consider whether the assignment, paper, or project could be turned in virtually. The instructor and I need to discuss how this will be done so that there is no confusion if and when it comes up.
  • The instructor may consult with the DRC if they are concerned that an extension of the deadline is not reasonable for the course.
  • Deadline extensions may not apply to online discussion board posts.

You will be asked to e-sign this agreement every term when you log in to DRC Online to enter your service requests. On occasion, you may be asked to provide a signed copy of this agreement.
