Guidance in writing the Research, Teaching, and Contributions to Diversity Statements

Research Statement Guidelines

The purpose of this research plan is to provide a foundation of the work you have completed in your career, as well as your plan for your future work. It should capture your research vision and creativity.

  • Begin by detailing your current/recent research and the impact this work is making in the field. Impact could be demonstrated through publications, citations, importance of research results, or other metrics.
  • Identify what the next innovative research steps are and how they will contribute to/what problems they will solve in the field within the next 5 years.
  • Highlight collaborations you will build within the department, the college, PSU, and any other relevant collaborations.
  • Describe how you intend to develop a robust mentorship environment in your research lab.
  • Discuss your extramural funding objectives, any specialized resources you require, and infrastructural support you may need to successfully conduct your research.

The research statement should not exceed 3 pages.

Teaching Statement Guidelines

Teaching is a core foundation of our mission at Portland State University. Within your teaching statement, please provide details on the following items:

  • Detail the current courses within MME you could teach as well as additional courses you might create and how they would fit with the current curriculum and current faculty research agendas.
  • Provide your previous experience and training in teaching and how your teaching capabilities fit within our department, college, and the university.
  • Describe your understanding of how teaching and learning will take place in your classroom. This may include, but is not limited to:
    • The impact and influence of your scholarship and disciplinary context on your teaching.
    • Teaching goals you have for yourself and for your students and how your teaching enacts these goals.
    • How your teaching facilitates student learning and what, for you, constitutes evidence of student learning
    • The ways in which you create an inclusive learning environment
    • Your interests in and experience with new techniques, activities, and types of learning
    • Methods of teaching that you rely on frequently

The teaching statement should not exceed 2 pages.

Contributions to Diversity Statement Guidelines

The Contributions to Diversity Statement should describe an understanding of barriers facing under-represented groups, your past involvement in activities related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and how you would envision contributing to opportunities to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within Portland State University.

  • Understanding of Barriers

Describe your understanding of the barriers that exist for historically under-represented groups in higher education and/or your field. This may be evidenced by personal experience, educational background, or professional experiences.

  • Past Activities

For all past activities, please be specific about the context, your role, scope or level of effort, and the impact. The following are examples of activities that qualify as contributions to diversity and equity. These are illustrative and by no means exhaustive: Mentoring/Tutoring, Educational Outreach and Advocacy, Committee Service, Research Activities, and Community Service.

  • Future Plans

Describe how you plan to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion within your roles as a research leader, teacher, and mentor in the MME department at Portland State University. Include activities you would pursue and how they would fit into your research area, department, school, campus, city, state, or national context. Be as specific as possible, but also realistic about your level of effort and time commitment.

The contributions to diversity statement should not exceed 2 pages.
