Graduate advising starts when students are first admitted to the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME), Master of Science in Materials Science Engineering (MSME), or the Mechanical Engineering PhD program. Below is a step-by-step guide of graduate advising as it will evolve during the program of choice.

First Admitted

Students admitted to the MSME or MSMSE degree programs are assigned an initial advisor. This assignment is tentative and is meant to provide support to new graduate students entering the program. Initial advisors can help to select first courses, guide students to an area of study based on interests, and help recommend permanent advisors. It important for students to consider their course of study, program goals, and interests before meeting with potential permanent advisors.

Second Term

An official advisor selection must be made by the end of the student's second term in the program. Only MME faculty can be advisors for students within the MME graduate programs. Students should focus on choosing an advisor that is best able to provide the graduate training in his or her area of interest. To see a list of our faculty, please see our Staff & Faculty Directory

Once a student has found an advisor they have connected with, students can use the Permanent Advisor Request form to have their advisor and track selection confirmed by the department.

If students fail to secure a permanent advisor by the end of their second term, the student will be switched to the coursework-only track of their degree program.

Moving Forward

The courses in a student's graduate program are selected in consultation with a student's faculty advisor. The advisor approves elective courses and the Department submits documentation to the Graduate School indicating that the selected courses meet established criteria. Advisors can also assist in course planning, research opportunities, and department-specific questions.

In addition, students pursuing the MSMSE degree program will need to establish a Student Program Committee, consisting of faculty members in the materials group, upon acceptance to the program. This Committee meets with students each term to approve the courses to be taken in the subsequent term, to outline the course of study the student and advisor have chosen, and to provide an extra point of contact between the student and department.
