RGS announces recipients of prestigious PSU research awards

Today, Portland State University announced the 2023 awards for excellence in research, graduate mentoring, and research administration. The awards are among the University's highest honors, recognizing Portland State faculty and staff for outstanding research, scholarship, creativity, and dedication to PSU students’ success.

Five of the 14 research awards are university-wide; the remaining nine are awarded by individual colleges and schools. 

PSU will celebrate this year’s awardees at the Research Awards Ceremony & Reception at the close of Research Week on Friday, May 12. All PSU faculty, staff, and graduate students are welcome to attend; please register at this link. 

The university research award winners are:

  • President Career Research Award: Ken Stedman
  • Graduate Mentoring Excellence Award: Melissa Thompson
  • Early Career Research Award: Kelly E. Gleason
  • Faculty Research Award: Karen Cellarius
  • Research Administrator of the Year Award: Helen Frey

The college/school research award winners are:

  • Maseeh College of Engineering & Computer Science: John Lipor
  • College of Liberal Arts & Sciences: Janice Lee
  • Honors College: Rebecca Summer
  • School of Business: Theodore Khoury
  • College of Education: Amy Parker
  • College of Urban & Public Affairs: Billie Sandberg
  • College of the Arts: Laila Seewang
  • School of Social Work: Miranda Mosier-Puentes
  • OHSU-PSU School of Public Health: Ryan J. Petteway

"The recipients of these awards are the best in their fields," says Jason Podrabsky, Interim Vice President for Research & Graduate Studies, adding: "Their achievements and dedication to our students are a source of pride for the entire university."

Recipients of the awards are some of the most dynamic faculty and staff members at PSU. They are nominated by their colleagues, then selected by a jury of their peers based on the significance and quality of their research or creative achievements and their extraordinary commitment to creating an environment supportive of research excellence and student success.
