Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management and Community Resilience

The Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management and Community Resilience (EMCR) is a skill-based program balanced with cutting-edge theoretical approaches, created to train dedicated and compassionate professionals, who will go on to tackle the most daunting of problems, locally and globally. 

Among its distinctive features, our Emergency Management and Community Resilience certificate offers:

• a curriculum thoughtfully designed by experts in anthropology, communication, geography, geology, public administration, urban planning, and other fields
• the chance to study in an epicenter of urban and rural opportunity, surrounded by volcanoes, fault lines, forests, and the coast

The EMCR certificate is an excellent complement to other graduate programs at PSU. It is also a good option for students who are not ready to commit to a master's program. EMCR certificate students can easily transition their courses into the masters program to continue their studies.

The Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management and Resilience is a five (5) course program organized as follows:

Each student must enroll in and successfully complete the following three (3) core courses:

EMCR 521            Anatomy of History of Disasters
EMCR 591            Culture, Vulnerability and Disaster Resilience

Enroll in and successfully complete TWO of the following six (6) courses:

EMCR 535            Strategies for Organizing Recovery, Mitigation and Resilience
EMCR 587            Principles and Practice of Emergency Management
EMCR 560            Climate Resiliency Planning
EMCR 545            Risk and Strategic Communication 
EMCR 588            International Perspectives on Disaster Management and Resilience
EMCR 567            Community Resilience in Coupled Socio-Ecological Systems
