BSME Admission

Students wishing to apply to the BSME Program need to apply to both Portland State University and the Mechanical Engineering Department to be considered for admission. Information about applying to PSU can be found through Undergraduate Admissions.

While students may declare Mechanical Engineering as their major at any time after enrolling at PSU, they must be formally admitted to enroll in restricted upper-division courses and graduate from the program.

Selective Admissions Overview

As the enrollment has grown, selective admission became the necessary solution for healthy class size along with maintaining our standards of excellence. Prior academic performance is our criteria for selective admission; the Admissions Committee will be choosing the most highly qualified students for admission.

Selective admission is based on the applicant pool for that admission cycle. This means that the Selective G.P.A cut-off from a previous year has no bearing on what the Selective G.P.A cut-off will be for the following year.  The minimum Selective GPA cut-off; however, will be 2.25.

HOW TO APPLY

1. REVIEW PROGRAM ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

Information regarding admissions eligibility and requirements, deadlines, continuation criteria, and appeals are posted and maintained in the PSU Bulletin. MME also provides course plans to guide students as they map out their educational journey, as well as important information for transfer and post-baccalaureate students. Please thoroughly review the information at these links before applying to the Upper Division.

2. APPLY TO PSU

In addition to the Departmental online application form, students transferring from other institutions must also apply for admission to PSU and submit all transcripts from previous institutions to the Office of Admissions. Completing this step early streamlines the Upper Division application review process, and helps the MME Department deliver admissions decisions to applicants quicker.

3. APPLY TO THE UPPER DIVISION

When you are nearing completion of your lower division coursework (typically around the end of your sophomore year), fill out the Departmental application for the Upper Division. The application for Fall term is open until April 15. If you are in-progress or transferring courses from outside of PSU that have not yet appeared on your DARS Report, have PDFs of unofficial transcripts ready to upload with your application.

Fall 2024 BSME Application

The Fall 2024 BSME Application will open on February 15, 2024. The deadline is April 15, 2024.

Students completing Winter 2024 courses outside of PSU: Your application will not be processed if the MME Department does not receive Winter 2024 grades by April 15, 2024.

Please note that students do not need to be admitted into the BSME program to take lower-division (100 and 200 level) coursework. Complete this application only if lower-division admission requirements will be completed by the start of fall term.

Students have two weeks to complete the application once it is started. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Fall Registration

Students admitted to the BSME upper-division program will be placed on one of two course plans for their junior year. These two course plans are the ME 313 First Course Plan or the ME 320 First Course Plan. These course plans are designed to maintain a healthy class size and help make sure that seats are available for all newly-admitted students. All juniors will complete the same courses, just in a different order, and still meet prerequisites.

MECOP students are placed on the course plan that aligns with MECOP program requirements.

Admitted students will be able to register for their 300-level ME courses once they returned their signed admission letters. Transfer students may need to also complete Orientation in order to register. Admitted students are guaranteed seats in the ME courses outlined on their course plan.

By following the assigned course plan, a student is able to complete the BSME in four years. As a reminder, the Department requires students to complete all highlighted classes with a grade of 'C' or better, prior to applying for admission to the upper-division program.

Students are encouraged to review course prerequisites, which are outlined in the Bulletin.
