Getting Approval to Take Upper Division ME Courses

Completion of the Mechanical Engineering Bachelor of Science program requires approval to enroll in upper division (300 and 400-level) courses.

If you have any questions about this form or program requirements, contact mmedept@pdx.edu.

Requirements

Students who meet the following requirements are guaranteed approval to enroll in upper division coursework. Students who do not meet the overall GPA requirement, whose GPA for required courses is between 2.0 - 2.24, or are missing up to 6 required courses, will be approved and placed on a customized plan to start upper division coursework.

Upper Division Approval Request Form Materials

When you submit the application, you may be asked to submit the materials and information below as part of your request. We recommend preparing these materials in advance of submitting your application.

  • Students who started at PSU as a first year and did not earn college credits from another institution: Provide a DARS report to verify that you have completed the course requirements listed below.
  • Students who earned college credits at another institution: Unofficial Transcripts from all colleges attended.

How to Run & Interpret Your DARS Report

To be granted approval to the Upper Division Mechanical Engineering Program, you must have completed the required lower division courses with a selective GPA of at least 2.0. To verify that you have met these requirements, students who have you’ll need to run a DARS report. DARS (the Degree Audit Reporting System) is a tool for tracking your degree progress and requirements.

Follow these steps to run your DARS Report.

  • Make sure the audit level is set to "PSU - Undergraduate or Post-bac Audit" and then click "Continue”
  • In the drop-down box for "Degree Program," select "Mechanical Engineering Admission - ADMIT-ME" and then select "Run Audit"
  • Your audit report will now be displayed.

Interpreting the Admission DARS report

To decide how to proceed, review the message at the top of your DARS report.  One of the following should apply:

All requirements identified below have been met or All requirements are complete using in-progress courses
You are ready to request approval for the Upper Division Program. Select "Print/Download" to display a printable version of your DARS report, and then use the relevant feature of your browser to print or save the report as a PDF.

You're making progress: at least 1 requirement remains unmet
If you have 6 or fewer required lower division courses that are outstanding, you may still be approved and placed on a customized plan to start upper division coursework. Review the items listed in the DARS report to confirm which requirements you have already satisfied, which ones are in progress, and which ones will be completed in a future term.

If the DARS report indicates that you have not satisfied either the "MCECS AL/SS requirement" or any other required class that you believe you have completed, contact your academic advisor. Requirements are not considered complete until they are reflected on DARS.  Students may need to allow extra time for courses to appear on DARS if they are being transferred from another institution and are advised to monitor their previous institution's transfer process to ensure that the transfer occurs as quickly as possible.

If you need any help in understanding what requirements or steps are still needed, then contact your academic advisor.
