Vanport Building Evacuation

Vanport Tenant Handbook

Please follow these guidelines to assist with a safe and speedy building evacuation

  • Keep yourself and others calm.
  • Quickly proceed out of the building using the planned evacuation route. If time and conditions permit, gather your most important items. Consider things you would need to get back into the building or to leave campus (ID, wallet, keys, etc).
  • Leave by the nearest marked exit and alert others in your area to do the same.
  • Before opening any closed doors, check the door for heat with the back of your hand. Do not open if the door is hot.
  • Walk, do not run. Use handrails and keep to the right if exiting via a stairwell.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • If you are comfortable doing so, assist people with disabilities to a safe location to wait for emergency responders. Note their location so you can pass that information along to safety personnel.
  • Close windows and doors as you proceed.
  • Report to the designated Safety Spot. Gather with your organization in the Urban Plaza
  • Wait for instructions from emergency response personnel. Do not re-enter the building until you are told it is safe to do so.

Vanport Building Safety

GENERAL SAFETY GUIDELINES
For your safety, your cooperation is asked in observing the following building safety guidelines:

  • Notify the Management Office (877-348-4724) of loiterers or suspicious persons in corridors or restrooms.
  • Do not let unknown individuals follow you into the building or your suite, or ask them if they can show you their PSU badge before letting them into the building or suites.
  • Always lock your suite when there is no one in the office – even if you have just stepped out for a quick moment.
  • Always remember to take your suite keys and building access card with you when you leave the premises.
  • Always keep corridor doors closed.
  • Do not leave personal valuables unguarded in reception areas, on desktops or in unlocked drawers.
  • Request a security escort (CPSO) to your car if you leave the building after dark.
  • Notify the police and the Management Office of any crimes.
  • Sign up for PSU Alerts.

SAFETY SYSTEMS
Before there is an emergency - locate the emergency equipment in your area and know how to use it. Vanport Safety Manual

  • Alarms - Vanport is equipped with an electronic life safety system that is monitored twenty-four (24) hours a day remotely. The main components of the life safety system are smoke detectors, heat detectors, and a wet pipe sprinkler system. Smoke detectors function as early warning devices. When a smoke detector is activated, fire alarms will sound on all floors. Evacuation is required anytime the fire alarm system sounds.
  • Automatic Sprinkler System - (Activation will alert emergency personnel.) It is important that at least 18" of clearance be kept at all times below the line of sprinklers to allow proper water distribution over the fire. Leaks or other problems with the automatic sprinkler system should be reported promptly to the Building Management Office (877-348-4724).
  • Emergency Exit - Exit the building via an exit stairwell. Do not use elevators. Use safe stairwell exit procedures including:
    • Remain calm and quiet
    • Remove high heeled shoes
    • Exit in a single file and keep to the right using handrails
    • Move quickly, but do not run
    • Assist those who may have trouble on the stairs or who have been injured
  • Emergency Lighting - This will aid in the evacuation in areas of corridors and stairways.
  • Fire Extinguishers - Only use a fire extinguisher if you feel comfortable and confident in doing so. Fire extinguishers should only be used on fires no larger than “waste basket” size. Be sure that the room exit is behind you when using the fire extinguisher, so that you do not have to go around the fire in order to escape. Always notify CPSO, from a safe location, after using a fire extinguisher. Never block or obstruct extinguishers with furniture or equipment.
  • Defibrillator - There is one defibrillator located on the second floor
  • Fire Exit Doors - Must be kept clear of obstruction at all times to provide a safe means of egress in stairways.
