Welcome to PSU Fire Prevention!

PSU has established fire prevention and life safety programs, procedures, and guidance in order to ensure a safe working and living environment for faculty, staff, students, and visitors. The Fire Prevention Coordinator, along with other campus partners and the City of Portland Bureau of Fire and Rescue, enforce these programs.

Fire Prevention Plan

The Fire Prevention Plan is the primary document for understanding fire prevention efforts at Portland State. This plan describes major fire hazards, potential ignition sources, and the fire protection equipment for PSU spaces. 

Fire Safety Inspections

Every 2 years, Portland Fire & Rescue inspects every building & space owned or occupied by PSU. The PSU Fire Prevention Coordinator accompanies the City of Portland Fire Inspector to identify all instances in which PSU is in violation of International, Oregon, or City of Portland Fire Code

Hot Work

Hot work is defined as any welding, brazing, grinding, open flame use, or other spark-producing activities. When any of these activities occur in PSU buildings, the Hot Work Program must be utilized to ensure fire and life safety requirements are met. 

Fire System Impairment

A fire system impairment occurs when a fire protection or detection system, fire alarm system, or other system designed to maintain the fire resistance of the building is taken out of service, either wholly or in part, planned or unplanned. 

Fire Watch

Fire Watch is a short-term emergency measure to provide an acceptable life safety precaution in any buildings / spaces that have an impaired fire alarm system, fire sprinkler system, or any other life safety feature of the building that could put occupants in danger.
