Jazz professor Darrell Grant unveils chamber opera, "Sanctuaries"

After a 16-month delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, "Sanctuaries," the first opera by School of Music & Theater professor and renowned jazz musician Darrell Grant, premieres Tuesday, September 7, 2021. “Sanctuaries” is a site-specific chamber opera examining issues of gentrification, racial equity and Portland’s history of redlining.

Presented by Third Angle New Music at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum Pavilion, "Sanctuaries" features a libretto by Anis Mojgani, and direction by Alexander Gedeon. “Sanctuaries” also features costume design by Alison Heryer, the Sue Horn-Caskey and Charles F. Caskey Professor in Textile Arts and Costume Design in the School of Art + Design.

In April 2020, Portland State Magazine published an interview between Lisa Jarrett, Associate Professor of Community and Context Arts in the School of Art + Design, and Darrell Grant on his experience creating "Sanctuaries."
