In this collaborative animation-making exercise, embroiderist-animator Charlie Wilcox guides participants through the experimental process of fabric filmmaking. Inspired by the tradition of direct filmmaking, in which animators would directly alter the celluloid filmstrip through stamping, etching, dyeing and other experiments, this project will take a similar approach to a long loop of fabric that the entire group can embroidery, paint, stencil, dye, embellish, and whatever else they can think of–working together, working along, however we decide we want to approach it in the workshop space. This is a space of exploration and expression, where each participant can bring their own ideas and abilities to the project and add to it in how they see fit. This isn't a traditional animation practice, and we can be a bit freer in how we approach this project and allow for a collaboration to build organically. When we near the end of the workshop, we'll take what we made and run it through the camera to see just how the animation turned out! All throughout the workshop, Charlie will be on hand to discuss his approaches to animated embroidery, give tips and tricks, and demonstrate how some of his animations work as they jump from fabric to screen.
