The Electronics Prototyping Lab (EPL) is a rapid prototyping hub located on the lower level of the engineering building (FAB 84). EPL is a maker's space and community hub where PSU students from all disciplines can design, build, and troubleshoot electronic and mechanical projects. Located on hte lower level of PSU’s Fourth Avenue Building, the EPL supports hands-on learning and project development for students across the university.
Equipment and Capabilities
The EPL provides access to specialized equipment for electronics fabrication, prototyping, and light manufacturing, including:
- LPKF ProtoLaser U4 laser circuit board router
- Additional circuit board routers
- Pick-and-place machine for surface-mount component assembly
- Reflow oven
- Soldering stations
- 3D printers
- Laser cutter
- Waterjet cutter
- Mill
- Lathe
Students may use equipment after completing required training. Lab usage is charged on a per-job basis at student-friendly rates.
Student Support and Training
The EPL is staffed by student managers who help users with projects, troubleshooting, and collaborative problem-solving. The lab also offers workshops and training opportunities, including soldering sessions and on-demand instruction for specific tools, techniques, and equipment. Students are encouraged join the EPL Discord to ask questions about projects, resources, and tools.
Lab Kits and Supplies
The EPL sells lab kits and components required for several ECE courses, along with general prototyping supplies such as:
- Toolboxes
- Breadboards
- Jumper wire kits
- Resistor kits
- Capacitor kits
- Other electronics and prototyping materials
All purchases must be made in person at the lab. Online purchases are not available.
Industry Engagement
In addition to supporting students and faculty, the EPL operates an Industry Engagement Program that allows industry members to access lab equipment to build prototypes or products. The program also creates mentorship opportunities between industry professionals and PSU students. Many PSU faculty also use the EPL to support research projects.
Lab Hours
Lab hours are updated weekly.
Support the EPL
The EPL is a 501(c)(3) organization and accepts tax-deductible donations. Contributions help expand the lab’s ability to support students, projects, and hands-on learning. To contribute, contact epl@pdx.edu.
