Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)

About WUE

Portland State University proudly participates in the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) for academically qualified incoming Freshmen and Transfer students who meet specific criteria. WUE students receive greatly reduced tuition.

The WUE benefit is available to first year students for up to four academic years, transfer students who are sophomores will receive WUE for up to three academic years, transfer students who are juniors or seniors will receive WUE for up to two academic years so long as they maintain status as a PSU non-resident undergraduate student, maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 for overall attempted credits and enroll in 12 or more PSU undergraduate credits each academic term. The WUE award is automatically awarded to students who meet this criteria regardless of intended major:

1. Apply for fall term by the WUE deadline:

  • FRESHMAN: Apply for fall term admission to PSU by February 1
  • TRANSFER: Apply for fall term admission to PSU by February 1

Please note: Students earning college credit while in high school (such as Running Start) are considered Freshmen for admission, WUE, and other scholarship purposes at PSU.

2. Be a legal resident of one of the following states or territories: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, Guam or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

3. Meet PSU's academic requirements for WUE:

  • Freshmen Academic Requirements: 3.2 cumulative unweighted high school GPA OR 1270 SAT OR 27 ACT composite
  • Transfer Academic Requirements: 3.0 cumulative college GPA

Incoming students will be notified via email in early 2019 if they are selected for the WUE program and are required to submit final transcripts to PSU no later than August 1 to maintain the award.

**Admitted students will be notified in their financial aid award if they have received the WUE scholarship. The estimated cost of attendance in the award is based on 15 credits per term.

WUE Awarding Process

All qualified students who meet the above criteria are considered for WUE regardless of intended major. Incoming students will be notified via email if they are selected for the WUE program. If an applicant does not meet the requirements for WUE they will be considered for alternative scholarships such as the Out-of-State Opportunity ScholarshipAn applicant may be awarded WUE or an Out of State Opportunity Scholarship (OOS), but not both.

Additional Information

PSU offers annual general scholarships in addition to the WUE program. University scholarships are competitive and require a separate scholarship application. All incoming students are encouraged to apply for these university-wide scholarships through the PSU Scholarship Database. The deadline to complete the application is February 1 for incoming freshman and transfer students.

All applicants to PSU are encouraged to complete a FAFSA application.
