Four Years Free: Frequently Asked Questions

What is Four Years Free?

Four Years Free covers standard tuition and mandatory fees for up to 15 credits per term for first-year Oregon residents who meet academic and financial aid requirements. Initial awards will be made for 12 credits per term and will be adjusted as needed after the census date for each term. Four Years Free is available for the standard academic terms: fall, winter and spring, but not summer term.

Who is eligible?

Eligible Students Must Be:

  • Eligible to receive a Federal Pell grant as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

No. Personal funds, federal work study (if awarded), loans, or other scholarships will be needed to cover housing and other educational expenses such as books and supplies.

Once I am a PSU student, how do I keep the award?

Complete the FAFSA each year by February 1.  You must remain eligible for the federal Pell grant. Enroll full-time each term (12 - 15 credits per term) and maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative college GPA.

If I receive the award how long am I eligible to keep it?

Enroll full-time each term and maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative college GPA, and you can receive the award for up to 12 consecutive terms of enrollment.

If you are awarded Four Years Free but do not enroll at PSU in the fall term for which you applied, your future eligibility for Four Years Free will be dependent upon the same requirements, including continued Pell eligibility. You must, therefore, meet the Four Years Free eligibility requirements when you re-apply to PSU for a future fall term or at the time you enroll after an approved gap year.
