Program Status: Assess

This initiative supports Portland Scholars during their first year at PSU with a goal of improving outcomes for first-year  students who enroll with a high school GPA below 3.0. Through the cohort model, students will develop community, belonging, and academic identity. Cohort models and early academic integration have been shown to increase retention. Students involved in a cohort often exhibit increased campus engagement and express greater overall satisfaction and a strong sense of belonging. This project aims to create a cohort for conditionally admitted students that will span three terms of Student Success FRINQ pilots. Through this cohort model, students will receive an enhanced support system throughout their first year at PSU.

Accomplished

  • Coordinated Fall Scholar FRINQ pilot classes with Qualities in Math Confidence and College Success Courses.
  • Created workflow with Advising and Registrar to enroll Scholars in appropriate courses.
  • Held work sessions to place all Scholars in the appropriate courses
  • Sent communication out to scholars to communicate FRINQ pilot options.
  • Created a slide deck for advisors to share with students at orientation. Advisors assisted students who were not pre-registered to pick an appropriate course.
  • Up to half of each Student Success FRINQ course were Portland Scholars.
  • Debriefed on the process with the project team.

Project Health

  • Project is paused, we may reassess at a later date due to the following:
    • Communicating options to Portland Scholars and getting them enrolled in the correct classes at the correct times,
    • Challenges with enrollment of FRINQ student success courses as a result of holding seats for scholars,
    • Communicating registration restrictions to advisors so they have the necessary information to guide students appropriately,
    • The capacity of Pathway directors to continue to place scholars throughout the summer,
    • All FRINQ courses will contain Student Success materials in future years.
