Academic Warning Workshop / Academic Probation Intervention

Project Status: Monitor/Assess

This workgroup was formed to revise the existing Academic Warning Workshop.  Looking carefully at student feedback, data trends, and success metrics, it was apparent that a redesign was essential to accomplish the workshop’s goals.  The launch of the new Academic Warning Workshop was at the end of the summer 2023 term.

Accomplished

  • Assessment of the last two years of data for students on AW and AP (highlighted findings listed below)
  • The following student populations have higher rates of being placed on AW:
    • Non-binary
    • First generation
    • Black
    • Hispanic/Latino
    • Pacific Islander students
    • Students entering with a GPA below 3.0
  • A significant majority (65%) of new students who land on academic warning will do so at the end of their first term at PSU. An additional 16% of students go on academic warning in their second term.  Cumulatively, 81% of new students who experience academic warning do so within their first two terms at PSU.

In Progress

  • Discussing the timing of holds and working to move the implementation to after the add/drop period 
  • Working with OSS and the Student Academic Support Services to determine if there is a better practice regarding how and when we place holds on students’ accounts for academic standing
  • Determining the appropriate academic resources for students on AW/AP
  • Working with a broad group of constituents to research “academic recovery” programs
  • Final assessment report to be available after spring term 2025, along with recommendations
