How to Prepare a Strong Scholarship Application

There are a few factors that the scholarship review committee takes into consideration when reviewing applications:

  1. Grade point average (GPA)
  2. Letters of recommendation
  3. Scholarship essays
  4. Awards & extracurriculars
  5. Information from your financial aid application.

Below you’ll find details about how to present and prepare your materials and what scholarship committees are looking for when they review applications for scholarships.

Letters of Recommendation or References

For many scholarships you’ll need to request letters of recommendation or compile a list of references. There are important things to consider as you reach out to people who could be potential references and how you can support them as they prepare materials on your behalf.

  • Pick appropriate academic or personal references per application guidelines.
  • Ask them well in advance, and provide supporting documents (e.g. resume, your essay, scholarship prompt).
  • Make sure they know the deadline and process.
  • Follow up with thanks and inform them of the outcome.

Scholarship Essays

For most scholarships, you’ll need to write an essay that answers a question about your life, educational aspirations, and/or career goals. Before you write your essay review these tips to help you prepare a strong and well-written essay:

  • Read and understand the prompt; be sure to answer all parts.
  • Outline first. Use clear structure: topic sentences → elaboration → strong finish.
  • Use concrete examples rather than vague statements.
  • Keep language simple, clear, and correct.
  • Check grammar and spelling.
  • Have someone else proofread with fresh eyes.

Past Awards & Extracurricular Activities

  • Maintain a current list of honors and roles.
  • Highlight sustained involvement, leadership, and commitment to community service.

Financial Aid Information

  • Submit the FAFSA by February 1 for priority consideration.
  • Many scholarships use information from your financial aid application in awarding decisions.
