PSU History

I first arrived in Child & Family Studies as a half-time adjunct faculty member in 2004. I moved into a full-time assistant professor role in 2006 when Child & Family Studies moved into the School of Social Work. In 2011, I became director of the CFS program and received tenure in 2012.

Academic/Research Focus

I have also worked extensively in varied youth service settings, ranging from residential care and juvenile corrections to homeless youth services and work with LGBTQ young people.

My research and scholarship focuses on youth and young adults, critical and qualitative epistemologies, gender and sexuality, and professional development of youth workers in alignment with Canadian, British, and European traditions of child and youth care, youth work, and youth pedagogy.

My teaching and scholarship is informed by critical race theory, critical feminisms, poststructuralism, and queer theory. I enjoy working with students and research partners to shake up my own and our fields' orthodox thinking and the practice/scholarship status quo that orthodoxy reinforces.

Personal Interests

I love travel and exploration. I hike and enjoy being outside, and given that I'm from the Pacific Northwest, I am not afraid of cold and drizzly rain. I appreciate sarcasm and wit, enjoy quick banter, and love bad television. I'm a parent to an amazing and powerful young person who challenges me all day, every day, to walk my talk.
