Dear SSW Community and Colleagues,
It’s hard to believe we’re already heading into the final few weeks of classroom time for the Fall term here at the SSW!
Many of you have been incredibly busy outside the classroom this fall as well, whether you were attending or presenting at conferences, participating in community activities, or supporting causes you care deeply about.
As we pass the one-month mark of the federal government shutdown and furloughs, one of the many worrisome effects is the potential impact on the estimated 42 million people in the U.S. who rely on SNAP benefits.
I’ve been so inspired by the many messages circulating about how the SSW community can support one another during these interruptions in federal programs. We've seen a noticeable increase in donations to the student food pantry on the 6th floor—please, never hesitate to access this helpful resource if you find yourself in need. And a big thank you to all of you who have donated to or helped facilitate food distribution to those in need. These are times that will test us, but I am truly gratified to see our community pulling together with such mutual aid and support.
Sadly, our community has also suffered some heartbreaking losses since the start of the academic year. The passing of two beloved former colleagues associated with the RRI—Dr. Beckie Child just recently, and Dr. Laurie Powers earlier this fall—has put many of us in a reflective mood. The contributions these two outstanding teachers, mentors, researchers, and advocates made to our school, their students, and the field of social work represent a legacy any of us would be proud to claim.
I also want to express my deep appreciation for those who are transitioning out of positions this fall. Professor Lisa Hawash served as the MSW Program Director during some particularly pivotal years and has now returned to full-time teaching. Meanwhile, our long-time student worker Kevin Le has departed the SSW for a new full-time role in the tech sector. We already miss him! Every person makes a unique and valuable contribution to the overall success of this school, and we extend our gratitude to all who have served the school in a wide range of capacities.
Here are a few things to look forward to as we enter the last half of the term:
- First Tuesday Community Hour Walks with the Dean: Join me by the elevators on the 6th floor, and we’ll go exploring our beautiful campus and city by foot! -- (Please dress for the weather, like Dean Wong in her photo above!)
- Faculty Colloquiums are back! Starting later this month, this is your chance to learn about the fascinating and important scholarly work of the SSW faculty. (Contact Shannon Blajeski s.blajeski@pdx.edu for more info, or to sign up for a presentation yourself.)
- Research Award Nominations: While we're on the subject of faculty research, please consider nominating someone for PSU's annual Research Awards, recognizing the outstanding achievements of research faculty, student mentors, and administrative professionals at PSU. The deadline to nominate is November 17th.
- Homecoming Activities: Enjoy Homecoming on Saturday, November 15th, at Providence Park!
- SSW Video Sneak Peek: One thing I hope will bring a smile to your face is the chance to see parts of the SSW’s new video, produced last spring, which will be showing on the lobby monitor at various times for the remainder of the term. I hope it’s an inspiring reminder of the value of social work in today's world and the unsurpassed dedication of the extraordinary people who have chosen this profession. We are immensely proud to be a part of this special community with you.
Sincerely,
Dean Evaon Wong
