Students for Equitable Access to Mental Health Services

Who We Are/Background

The Students for Equitable Access to Mental Health Services (SEAMHS) are partnering with the Center for Student Health and Counseling (SHAC). SEAMHS is a group of students at Portland State University that are attending the Community Psychology senior capstone.

Part of their Senior Capstone is the completion of a research study project. Their topic is focused on participatory action research with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students at PSU. This process will help us and SHAC to better understand the barriers that BIPOC students at PSU experience with equitable mental health treatment access. This team aims to work collaboratively with SHAC to identify ways that PSU and SHAC can increase access to mental health treatment for underserved BIPOC students that experience these barriers to receiving mental health services.

Project Goal

Their project will support SHAC efforts to identify barriers to mental health treatment access and utilization for BIPOC students, reduce barriers to mental health services, and promote inclusion, support, and equity for BIPOC students.

You're Invited!

We'd like to invite you to participate in a video conference focus group that will be held over Zoom. This should take no more than 60 minutes of your time, and a $25 gift card will be raffled off for your participation. We are currently looking for 10 students identifying as part of the BIPOC community, and who have direct or indirect experience with SHAC mental health services, to take part in these groups.

  • The focus group schedules are currently TBD but planned for the middle of April. There will be 6 sessions offered during various times and days within that time frame.

Please let us know if you would be willing and able to participate during one of these sessions by filling out the Google Form:

Your responses will be kept confidential, and any identifying information will be removed from your responses within the survey and focus group process.

Please consider taking some time to help provide valuable information that may improve ways that PSU and SHAC can increase access to mental health treatment for underserved BIPOC students who experience barriers to receiving mental health services.

Thank you!

We thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
