Domestic Student Health Insurance
Summer Waiver Open
Waiver deadline for summer is 7/5/20. If you already have an approved waiver from Fall'19, Winter or Spring '20, you do not need to do a Summer waiver. Fall 2020 waivers will not begin until August 2020.
Note to Spring Grads and students taking Summer term off: If you were on the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan with PacificSource in spring term, you will continue your health insurance through 9/19/20 regardless of graduation or not taking summer credits.
The deadline to submit a Spring Waiver Application has passed (4/12/20). If you failed to complete a waiver application by the deadline, you can submit an appeal for consideration.
Student Health Insurance Requirement & Eligibility
PSU requires that all domestic students enrolled in five credits* or more per term maintain comprehensive health insurance to ensure that students stay healthy and in the classroom. The Student Health Insurance Plan is major medical health insurance providing preventative, routine, and specialized health benefits. Those who have comparable outside health insurance can apply to waive the Student Health Insurance Plan.
*in-load non-Restricted Differential Tuition credits
Non-eligible/Restricted Differential Tuition Credits
Some credits, such as those earned during study abroad, the School of Public Health with OHSU, and some continuing education credits are considered Restricted Differential Tuition credits, meaning they do not count toward the 5 credit hours triggering the Student Health Insurance Plan requirement, or count towards eligibility to use SHAC.
How the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan Works
If you are covered by the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan, you will be enrolled automatically and charged $890 (per term). You will be charged this rate on your PSU student account each term, as long as you are taking five or more credit hours AND do not submit the health insurance waiver application.
Insurance Plan Eligibility
Students registered for five or more credits in a given term are eligible for the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan.
Students who drop below 5 credits by the end of the second week of the term, will no longer be eligible for the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan for that term.
If a student needs to drop all courses for medical reasons but wishes to continue to have the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan, they may contact the insurance team.

Insurance Waiver Process
Portland State University requires any student taking 5 or more credits per term to maintain comprehensive medical insurance coverage. If a student has their own health insurance, including OHP, they can submit an application to waive the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan.
Students who do not have private health insurance by the waiver deadline will be automatically placed on the PSU Student Health Insurance Plan.
If a PSU Health Insurance Waiver is approved during the current academic year, but you later lose your health insurance coverage, you may choose to opt back in to the Student Health Insurance Plan within 30 days of the loss of coverage by contacting the SHAC Insurance Team.
If a student submits an application to waive the Student Health Insurance Plan and is not approved, OR received notification from SHAC that their waiver failed a routine insurance audit, fill out a Request for Consideration Form.
10 business days from denied waiver/failed to appeal.
Students covered by the Oregon Health Plan (OHP) or Medicaid (Health Share, Care Oregon, Washington Apple, etc.) meet the University's requirements to waive the Student Health Insurance Plan. If you are not sure if your private insurance plan meets PSU's waiver criteria, contact us.
