Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

About Waivers

How often do I need to do an insurance waiver?

  • Once per academic year.
  • The academic year starts each September in the Fall term.

How do I know if my waiver went through correctly?

  • You will get an automated message saying Waiver Submitted
  • You will get a separate email with a confirmation number
  • The insurance fee will come off your student bill within 48 hours (excluding weekends)

Waivers that were started but not actually submitted do NOT count as waivers and will not be considered after the waiver or appeal deadlines.  You also may contact insurancehelp@pdx.edu and they can assist.

How will I know it’s time to do a new waiver?

  • The SHAC Insurance Team will mail up to 2 mailers and send 1-3 emails prior to each Fall term. During other terms of the year, you will receive 1-3 emails depending on when you register for classes.
  • We also have the waiver information posted on the academic calendar, new and transfer student check lists, SHAC pages, and Virtual Viking.

Can I still use SHAC if I waive out of the student insurance plan?

  • YES! Doctor, nurse and counseling visits are free. There are other services that have a cost which are billed to your student account.
  • Sometimes it is less costly for you to go to your insurance network provider, so we leave that up to you to choose.  For example, if you have Kaiser or OHP, it’s going to be much cheaper to get those services through your network provider.

Is there a deductible?

  • Yes, there is a $300 in-network yearly deductible that restarts every Sept. 20 for the new policy year.
  • The deductible is waived when you use SHAC.
  • A deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before claims start to be paid by insurance.

Does the PSU Student Insurance Plan cover dental or vision?

  • No. However, you can get 30-50% discount on dental if you use SHAC Dental Services.
  • For vision - Visual Eyes on SW Broadway offers a PSU student discount for vision services.
