International Student Information

Portland State's Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science is home to students from across the world, and we want every one of them to feel supported from day one. Whether you are just arriving in Portland or preparing to launch your career in the United States, this page brings together the resources that matter most to you.

Getting Started

International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS)

Your first stop for anything immigration related is PSU's International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). They handle visas, enrollment requirements, work authorization, and everything in between.

Complete Your ISSS Immigration Check-In

Before your first term begins, all new international students are required to complete an immigration check-in with ISSS. This step confirms your arrival and activates your SEVIS record, so it is important not to skip it.

Join an ISSS Pre-Arrival Webinar

ISSS also hosts pre-arrival webinars each term that walk you through what to expect, what to bring, and how to get settled in Portland. If you have not attended one yet, it is a worthwhile first step.

Attend ISSS Orientation and Social Events

Before classes begin, ISSS organizes orientations and social activities specifically for international students. These are a great way to meet people and get comfortable on campus before the term picks up.

Immigration and Visa Status

Staying in good immigration standing is an ongoing responsibility throughout your time at PSU. This section covers the basics of F-1 status, what you need to do to stay compliant, how to prepare for international travel, and how to keep your documents up to date.

Learn About F-1 Status and Compliance

Most international students at PSU hold F-1 status. ISSS maintains a full guide explaining what that means, which documents you need to keep valid, and how to stay in compliance throughout your studies

Review Immigration Status Requirements

Maintaining your status means staying enrolled full time, keeping your documents current, and reporting any address changes. ISSS walks you through all the requirements.

Get Ready for International Travel

If you are planning to travel outside the United States, there are steps to take before you go. Make sure your travel documents are in order and check with ISSS before booking anything.

Update Your Documents with ISSS

For document updates including I-20 updates, address changes, or document renewals, all requests go through ISSS via the WorldLink portal.

Work and Internships

One of the most valuable aspects of earning your degree at MCECS is the access it gives you to work opportunities in the United States. Whether you are looking for an internship while still in school or planning your path after graduation, here is what you need to know. Every MCECS degree program qualifies for the STEM OPT Extension, which means graduates can receive up to three years of post-graduation work authorization in the United States. This is one of the most significant advantages of earning an engineering or computer science degree at PSU.

Internships and Co-Ops Through CPT

While you are still enrolled, Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows you to complete internships or co-ops for academic credit. It is the most common path to internship opportunities for MCECS students during their studies.

Explore OPT Opportunities After Graduation

After graduation, Optional Practical Training (OPT) provides up to 12 months of work authorization in a field related to your degree. Processing takes time, so applying early is strongly encouraged

STEM OPT Extension for MCECS Graduates

MCECS graduates can then apply for the STEM OPT Extension, adding 24 more months for a total of 36 months of work authorization.

Career Support for MCECS Students

Maseeh College also has a dedicated career services team that can connect you with employers, help you find internships, and support your job search.

Funding and Scholarships

There are funding opportunities available specifically for international students, both through PSU and through Maseeh College. This section also covers tax filing, which is a requirement all international students need to meet each year.

Explore Scholarships for International Students

PSU's International Student Services manages several scholarships available specifically to international students. Eligibility requirements and deadlines are listed.

Explore MCECS Funding Opportunities

Maseeh College has its own funding opportunities as well, including scholarships, graduate assistantships, and research funding. You can explore those options.

Access Tax Guidance for International Students

International students also have specific tax filing obligations each year. ISSS provides guidance and tools to help you understand what is required

Community and Student Life

PSU has a strong international student community, and there are plenty of ways to get connected. From mentorship and cultural events to student organizations and academic advising, these resources are here to help you feel at home.

International Student Mentorship Opportunities

The International Student Mentor Program pairs you with an experienced international student who can help you navigate life at PSU. It is a practical way to build connections and get advice from someone who has been through the same process.

Cultural and Community Events for International Students

Throughout the year, ISSS hosts events celebrating different cultures, holidays, and communities. These are open to everyone and are a genuinely good way to meet people and feel at home in Portland.

Explore MCECS Student Organizations

Maseeh College also has a wide range of student organizations across engineering and computer science, from professional societies to cultural groups and hackathon teams.

Academic Advising for MCECS Students

For questions about your degree plan, course selection, or academic progress, your MCECS academic advisor is the right person to talk to.
