Statement on Religious Accommodations

PSU reminds faculty to review the university Religious Accommodation Policy. To support an inclusive learning and working community, PSU acknowledges that students and employees have individual rights to make personal choices regarding the nature, if any, of their religious beliefs. Thus, we provide reasonable religious accommodations for students and employees (faculty, staff, and student employees). Please note that PSU does not endorse any religious belief.

We recognize that observance of some religious holidays may require individuals to miss school and/or work or need to have flexibility in completing assignments or exams. For example, between April 2nd and May 2nd (on or about) individuals are observing Ramadan and the day of Eid el-Fitr. Students who observe Ramadan fast during the day, and break fast at sunset. On the day of Eid el-Fitr they do not work or study from sunset the day before through the next day. If you teach an afternoon or evening class, please consider recording lectures so students who are fasting may listen to them at a later time.

A student may contact you to obtain religious accommodations, such as flexibility in attending evening courses or extension on assignments or exams. Please work with students to provide accommodations. If you need additional assistance in determining a reasonable accommodation, please contact Liv Parks in the Office of Student Affairs.

Additionally, if you will be out for religious reasons, please inform your Chair and please email students to inform them about possible impacts on their classes. If you need assistance in identifying a reasonable accommodation, please contact Karen Kraus, Senior Leaves Administrator in Human Resources.
