About La Casa Latina Student Center

La Casa Latina Student Center is a hub where Latinx and Chicanx students come together to:

  • Create and connect with community

  • Empower identity
  • Receive services important to academic success

The center hosts events such as the Día de los Muertos, Sí Se Puede Week, and Latinx Heritage Month. All students are welcome to the center to meet new people and learn about Latinx culture (gender neutral for Latina/Latino) . La Casa Latina has a computer lab and space for students to relax. All students are welcome.

Leading Latin@s Partnership with Oregon Community Foundation

Begun in 2016, our center received a small grant from OCF for specific programming connecting students with Latinx professionals from the metro area for professional development opportunities. Our Leading Latin@s Series incorporates workshops, employer site visits and bringing professionals to campus to work directly with students. Learn more here:

Our Mission

La Casa Latina Student Center is a hub on campus where Latinx students and their allies come together to build and connect with community, develop leadership skills, empower their individual and collective identities, and participate in services that support academic success. The mission of La Casa Latina is to attract Latinx students to Portland State University, and provide cultural, social and academic services and programs that enhance the quality of Latinx student life. We also seek to raise awareness on our campus of the rich diversity of Latinxs across campus.

Our Story

On October 4, 2010 President Wim Wiewel launched a new initiative to recruit, support, and graduate more Latino students who make up the most underrepresented group at Portland State University relative to their growing population in Oregon. The program is called Exito, or success, in Spanish. One of the recommended steps towards providing more support for Latino students was to open a new Latino cultural center called La Casa Latina in Smith Memorial Student Union. La Casa Latina officially opened on June 13th, 2011 in SMSU 229. The artwork and murals in La Casa were made by PSU students.
