Hydrosocial Stories at PSU

This mini conference highlighted the connections between water and society, bringing together faculty, students and water professional to share their love of water through research, scholarship and creative work. Water Consonants by Janet Cowal

Created by PSU Applied Linguistics professor Janet Cowal, this piece samples water sounds from Eagle Creek, OR. Using Praat and FL Studio, Janet shows how river shapes filter water like mouths shape airflow, producing fricative frequencies called “Water Consonants.”

Gabe Sheoships, an adjunct faculty instructor in the Indigenous Nations Studies and University Studies departments, is featured in a short film called People, Lamprey, and Cultural Ecology where he highlights the importance of connections between migratory fish, urban forests, and community stewardship.

A new approach to conservation: ‘Indigenize’ not ‘decolonize’

Serina Fast Horse began working with the City of Portland as an intern with Environmental Services’ Community Watershed Stewardship Program. Now she is advising Environmental Services and other government agencies on ways to incorporate Indigenous knowledge into environmental restoration.
