The UPP Featured in Portland State Magazine

The latest PSU Magazine recognizes the UPP as a model partnership making waves across the state.

The USGS-PSU Partnership (UPP) was recently featured in PSU Magazine, highlighting its impact as a model for collaboration between universities and federal agencies. Established in 2007, the partnership has fostered groundbreaking research and hands-on training for future water science professionals. 

Joanna Thamke, director of the USGS Oregon Water Science Center, emphasized the strength of these connections, stating, “Having the opportunity to work with students that are here in the Portland area and having these relationships with our Portland State faculty just strengthens the things that we can do here at the Oregon Water Science Center.” 

The article also highlights David Burnett, PSU professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and USGS hydrologist James White's UPP Seed Grant project to develop cutting-edge instruments that collect underwater sound data in rivers. Through seed grants and ongoing collaboration, UPP continues to advance scientific discovery while preparing the next generation of water science professionals.
