The School of Social Work is happy to announce that Stephanie Bryson will step into a new role as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs on July 17, 2021. We're enthusiastic about Dr. Bryson, given her dedication to our school's mission and her commitment to student, faculty, and staff success.

Dr. Bryson has been at Portland State University since 2016, when she joined the faculty as the Bachelor of Social Work Program Director. Before coming to PSU, Dr. Bryson was an Assistant Professor of Social Work at the University of British Columbia, a Research Associate at the University of Kansas, and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Smith College.

Her direct practice experience is in child and family mental health, especially trauma treatment and community-based approaches to reduce underservice among marginalized groups.

Dr. Bryson received her PhD in sociology and social policy from Brandeis University and her MSW from Smith College. Over the past 20 years, her research has aimed to reduce coercion, stigma, and underservice within the child welfare, children’s mental health, and disability systems in the U.S. and Canada. She has received funding from the National Institute of Mental Health, the Children’s Bureau, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Her current projects focus on reparations as health policy, wise practices in child welfare, cultural studies and social work, and care in neoliberalism. Dr. Bryson's Selected Works are available to access in PDXScholar.

Please join us in welcoming Stephanie to her new position in the School of Social Work!
