Information for PSU Departments

Sponsored Student Programs works closely with academic departments and service units across campus in order to provide the best service and support for sponsored students. Like all international students, sponsored students need to follow the rules or their F1 or J1 visa first. In addition, they must also follow the parameters laid out in their scholarship programs which can limit the number of online and hybrid courses they can take, the number of times they are allowed to change their major, and the length of time they have to complete their program of study.

Sponsored Student Programs is here to help departments understand how to best help sponsored students when they need something for their sponsors. Please direct students to WorldLink and complete the Sponsored Student Letter Request (IELP, Undergraduate, Graduate forms) in order for our office to assist.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding a sponsored student, please contact intl-sponsor@pdx.edu.

Who is a sponsored student?

  • A student with a scholarship from an outside organization, usually a home government, embassy, or company. A Third-Party Billing agreement is established between PSU and the sponsoring agency. Sponsors provide their grantees with a financial guarantee letter specifying what educational costs they will cover. PSU invoices sponsors directly for these costs.

Which sponsors do we currently work with at Portland State?

  • The list of sponsors currently partnering with PSU changes frequently. Currently, our most common sponsor partners are:
    • AmidEast
    • Institute of International Education (Fulbright)
    • Kuwait Cultural Office
    • Laspau
    • Oman Cultural Division
    • Qatar Cultural Division
    • Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission
    • UAE Military Attache
    • UAE Police Divisions

I've been approached by a sponsoring organization. What are the next steps?

  • Please send an email to Dr. Sally Mudiamu, Director of International Partnerships & Initiatives to learn how to set up an agreement to partner with a new sponsoring organization. To start, it will be helpful to know the educational level, major, and the number of students that may be interested in attending PSU.
