Linda Walton

Professor Emerita Linda Walton retired from the History Department July 1, 2013 after 35 years of teaching Chinese, East Asian, and world history, 32 of them at PSU. She established the Institute for Asian Studies at PSU, served as its director for three years, and was chair of the History Department for six years. Although she will not be teaching, she will continue doing research on Neo-Confucian academies in middle and later imperial China and will present a paper on this at an upcoming conference at Harvard on Chinese history, 800-1400. A recipient of the Millar Award in 2012, Linda used the award to help fund a research trip to China that provided the material for a recent conference paper on “Confucian Academies in Contemporary China as Sites of Cultural Heritage Tourism.” This is the focus of a new research project on the place of Confucianism and Confucian academies in contemporary Chinese culture.  Linda joined the FOH board because she wants to continue to build the strength of the History Department, especially by helping to raise money to support faculty research and to develop public programs that let the community know what a rich resource the faculty are.
