Note: If you are not a current PSU student, you will need to apply and be admitted to Portland State University as an undergraduate. Please contact the Office of Admissions if you have any questions about that process.

Statement of Purpose

In 500 to 750 words, describe your goals and the reasons for your interest in the BFA program, and address the following questions:

  • Please describe your interest in the strand you are applying for (poetry, fiction, or nonfiction): what experience do you have with this genre, and what are some things you would like to learn?
  • Name two or three writers and/or texts that have strongly influenced you, and, focusing on one, describe in greater detail how the text or writer has affected your writing and your thinking.

Your statement should use one-inch margins, double-spacing, a standard 12-point font, no extra space between paragraphs, indented first line for each paragraph, information identifying the author and “BFA Statement of Purpose” on every page, and page numbers.

Writing Sample

The sample should be in the genre (fiction, nonfiction, poetry) of your application, and use one-inch margins, double-spacing, a standard 12-point font, no extra space between paragraphs, indented first line for each paragraph, information identifying the author and title of the manuscript on every page, and page numbers. Poetry manuscripts may be single-spaced. Previously published, single-authored work will be accepted. Manuscripts should demonstrate mastery of basic craft and literary promise, and should represent your best work regardless of whether or not it has been published. Writing samples can be comprised of one or multiple bodies of work equal to the page requirements listed below.

Fiction: 15 to 25 pages
Nonfiction: 15 to 25 pages
Poetry: 10 to 15 pages
