Curriculum

The Graduate Teacher Education Program (GTEP) provides aspiring teachers with pedagogical skills, and practical experience to effectively manage classrooms, teach diverse student populations and meet Oregon licensure requirements. Through the curriculum, students will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to educate for equity and social justice and utilize instructional strategies that are culturally and linguistically responsive. Students will engage in courses that emphasize positive learning environments and explore ways to integrate technology into instruction. The GTEP program offers subject-specific methodology which allows our students to focus on teaching strategies and methods uniquely suited to their academic subject, preparing them for a successful and impactful student teaching experience.

Program Format

Modality

Hybrid: This program includes in-person and online coursework.

Full-time program

Time to completion: one year

Scheduling

Daytime and Evening: This rigorous program of study includes both daytime and evening classes, with an increasing emphasis on evening coursework as student teaching responsibilities expand, eventually transitioning to full-time student teaching by spring term

Weekly Estimated Time Commitment:

The PSU Credit Hour Policy defines 1 credit hour as requiring a minimum of 3 hours of student time per week over the course of the term. PSU operates on the quarter system, and terms last 10 weeks.

Graduate school is a big commitment; please consider this information as a starting tool to help you gain a sense of the time commitment. Students learn differently and you may find that it takes you more time to complete the coursework on a weekly basis. Generally, a graduate program is more intensive and should require more time on homework than undergraduate courses; therefore, we recommend planning for more time than the minimum.

Students in the GTEP 1-year program generally take 15-18 credits per term and should expect to spend at least 30 hours per week of classroom time on homework and related activities.

As the program progresses, students engage in experiential learning through student teaching, which requires a greater time investment and provides a practical application of the coursework.

Part-time program

Time to completion: two years

Scheduling

Evening hybrid classes: This two-year program of study uses a hybrid format, blending later afternoon/evening on-campus classes with online classes. In the second year, students begin their daytime student teaching, which increases to a full-time commitment in spring term.

  • First Year: Students take approximately 6 credits per term. This includes at least 12 hours of weekly classroom time, homework, and other related activities.
  • Second Year: The focus shifts to include experiential learning through student teaching. This phase requires a greater time investment and provides a practical application of the coursework.

Program of Study

Cohort: This program operates as a cohort model, meaning that students follow a set program of study with a group of peers, learning together and providing a peer-support network. The program of study below outlines these classes term-by-term.

GTEP Field Experience

An important part of learning to teach takes place in schools and classrooms throughout the Portland metropolitan area. Teacher candidates in the one-year GTEP are involved in field experiences throughout the K-12 public school year. Teacher candidates in the two-year program are involved in field experiences in the K-12 public schools during the second year of the program.

During the GTEP program teacher candidates complete three field experiences:

  • Initial Field Experience: practicum (late Summer and Fall terms)
  • Student Teaching I: half-time student teaching (Winter term)
  • Student Teaching II: full-time student teaching (Spring term)
  • Field placements are identified and confirmed through the Field Placement Office in the College of Education. Detailed information about field placements are sent along with letters of Admission to the program.

Program completion

Once you’ve completed your program, you’ll need to apply for both your teaching license and degree (Masters of Education).
