Portland State University is joining the Northwest Climate Adaptation Science Center, and brings with it a uniquely urban and community-engaged lens to the center’s work of preparing for climate risks and building regional resilience.

The center, based at the University of Washington, is one of nine regional Climate Adaptation Science Centers federally funded by the U.S. Geological Survey. Its goal is to produce relevant and accessible science on climate change impacts and adaptation actions for Northwest natural resource managers and policymakers.

PSU, together with the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians (ATNI) and Northwest Indian College (NWIC), are the newest consortium members.

Paul Loikith, an associate professor of geography and director of PSU’s Climate Science Lab, said the partnership will provide opportunities for PSU researchers and students to tap into new funding pools and participate in the center’s projects and programming. He said the center can draw on PSU’s strong record of community-engaged research with its local urban focus.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity for many students and faculty across PSU to broaden their research and to get support for new applied research in the climate change space,” he said.
