One of the fastest-growing ensembles at the School of Music is the Portland State University Band. The band emphasizes relationship-building among students and learning classic music repertoire. If you are interested in joining the University band as a music major, auditions are held in the fall. Non-music majors are also welcome to audition for the band.

Portland State University Wind Ensemble

The Wind Ensemble is the premier wind and percussion ensemble in Portland State University’s concert band program. Comprised of the university’s most skilled wind and percussion performers, the ensemble is devoted to the performance of both time-honored masterworks and cutting-edge contemporary compositions. With a commitment to artistic excellence, the Wind Ensemble presents dynamic programs that celebrate tradition while embracing innovation. The group regularly commissions and performs new works by leading composers, contributing to the evolution of the wind band repertoire.

The Wind Ensemble presents one to two concerts each term and regularly participates in regional recruiting tours and music education conferences. Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30–3:00 PM, with rotating sectionals for woodwinds, brass, and chamber ensembles on Fridays from 1:30–2:35 PM. Members are expected to commit to the ensemble for the full academic year.

Portland State University Wind Symphony

The Wind Symphony is the second auditioned ensemble in the university’s concert band program. Made up of advanced wind and percussion musicians from across campus, the ensemble offers a dynamic performance experience focused on wind band masterworks and compelling contemporary compositions. Enrollment is open to all PSU students via audition or director invitation prior to the fall term.

The Wind Symphony performs one concert each term. Rehearsals are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30–5:00 PM, with sectionals scheduled as needed. A full-year enrollment commitment is expected for this ensemble. 

Portland State University Band

The University Band is a welcoming, non-auditioned ensemble open to all Portland State students and community members who play a wind or percussion instrument, regardless of experience level. This group offers an interesting, supportive space to make music and connect with others. With a focus on collaboration and musical growth, the University Band performs a wide range of repertoire and fosters a vibrant, inclusive band community. Students are welcome to join for a single term or stay involved for multiple terms. The ensemble rehearses on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00-5:30 PM in Lincoln Hall 37.
